Chalet Location in Chamonix

South facing and sunny, in a magnificent setting ringed with woods and mountains, the chalet is in the outskirts of Chamonix, in the village of Les Praz. The valley is flat here, so all these are on level ground. A car is not always absolutely necessary, but highly recommended. Do I need a car?

Winter: Our location within the ski areas

Getting to the slopes: The new fast Flegere ski lift, accessing Brevent-Flegere (Chamonix’s largest and sunniest area) is a five to ten minute walk from the chalet, and the central position of the chalet is ideal for access to the other lift systems of Chamonix: Grands Montets, Le Tour and Les Houches are all accessible by car or by the free buses and trains. The ski bus stops at the road entrance, about 100m from the chalet, or at the Flegere lift base (600m, more frequent) and the train station is a five to ten minute walk.

Cross-country skiing

The cross country skiing tracks weave through the trees close by the chalet, you can walk or ski from the chalet straight onto the crosscountry trails about 100 metres away.

Summer Map: Lifts

We are at the heart of the network of trails on the valley floor and you can walk straight out of the chalet without needing to go on a road. In summer, some of Europe’s most spectacular mountain hikes can be started right from the door. Or the Flegere lift, within a 5-10 minute stroll, can whisk you up to the start of the high alpine walks.

Summer Map: Trail Running

Many of these are also classic trail running routes, which again can be started from the door. The excellent Vallée du Trail site has downloadable maps and .gpx files. Fatmap also has excellent info on trail runs: screenshot here with our position marked. Trail running routes are marked in green.

Summer Map: Cycling

Cycling at all levels is great here, from relaxing flat valley floor trails to challenging all day routes, on roads or trails, again directly from the door without needing to go on a road.

The Chamonix golf course, a short walk away, is a world class eighteen hole course with superb views and an excellent restaurant. The leisure centre with its tennis courts and excellent outdoor and indoor swimming pools is about 15 minutes walk. Chamonix Spa is around 20 minutes walk.

Les Praz de Chamonix

We are in Les Praz, a sunny and charming area of Chamonix with a traditional village feel. A small bakery and grocery stocks necessities such as fresh vegetables, local cheese, wine and charcuterie. It opens at 7.30 with freshly baked bread, excellent croissants and pain au raisins etc for your breakfast and stays open until 7.30pm for last minute extra bottles of wine. Also does a very nice selection of ceramics and other homewares.

There are several friendly, English speaking ski and snowboard (winter) hiking and biking etc (summer) shops, a newsagent / tabac and a post office. There are half a dozen restaurants and a couple of bars, including a nice apres bar with regular live acoustic music. It’s five minutes from the centre of Chamonix by car, a 10 minute bus or train ride, or a pleasant 20-30 minute stroll along the woodland paths or on a quiet road.
